Thankful

I suspect Joe Cocker knew this would be his final album. He seemed to put a lot of care into the songs he chose. The lyrics to this song are really moving.

Backup Band

There have been at least four albums where Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were essentially the backup band for somebody else:

  • The Missing Years by John Prine
  • Unchained by Johnny Cash
  • American III:  Solitary Man by Johnny Cash
  • Mystery Girl by Roy Orbison
They also backed up Joe Cocker on a Rick Rubin produced album, but Joe hated it so much that he bought back the master tapes and never released it.  (I'd still like to hear it.)

I've lived to see the sun break through the storm…

Joe Cocker was nominated for a Grammy for this song in the early 80s, but somehow it never made it onto one of his albums and I don't think it was performed in concert.  It's a pity- it's a beautiful song.

I'll be coming home soon…

The studio version is available HERE, but I really like this one apparently filmed by a fan.  You can see how the man almost disappears, becoming a conduit for music and emotion to flow through.

He was amazing.
