The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum probably isn't read very much these days, but it's a fun read and I recommend it. It can easily be read in an afternoon.
There are a lot of things in the book that never made it to the movie. The Winged Monkeys in particular are fleshed out and better explained- it turns out they're not really such bad guys after all.
It is in the public domain, and available for free download. There is a nice edition available at Standard Ebooks HERE, and of course it's available at Project Gutenberg, HERE.
